Chandeliers: Yes, You Can Make Them Work In Your Home
If there’s one lighting feature guaranteed to transform a room instantly, it’s a chandelier.
Once reserved for grand ballrooms and sprawling country homes, chandelier lighting has officially entered the chat.
Because whether you love classic crystal droplet chandeliers, sculptural smoked glass or relaxed beaded designs, chandeliers are the ultimate statement lighting.
They don’t just illuminate a room; they create atmosphere, personality and that all-important “where did you get that?” moment.
At Rockett St George, we believe lighting should feel expressive, playful and a little unexpected.
And chandelier lights deliver all three in spectacular fashion.
What Is A Chandelier?
Traditionally, a chandelier is a decorative ceiling light featuring multiple arms, bulbs or tiers.
That said, modern chandelier lighting has evolved far beyond ornate crystal styles. Today's designs range from sleek and contemporary to bohemian, vintage-inspired and fabulously quirky.
The one thing they all have in common?
Presence.
A chandelier is designed to be noticed.
How To Style Chandeliers In Your Home
Hallway Chandeliers: Make A Dramatic First Impression
Your hallway sets the tone for the rest of your home, so why not make it unforgettable?
A chandelier instantly adds drama to even the simplest entrance space, and adds personality that creates a talking point from the moment guests walk through the door.
For smaller hallways, opt for compact chandeliers with delicate details like glass beads or metallic finishes (these also reflect light beautifully).
Larger spaces can handle oversized sculptural designs or tiered glass styles for maximum impact.
Style Tip: Position a mirror opposite your chandelier to bounce light around the room and amplify the glow.
Dining Room Chandeliers: The Ultimate Centrepiece
Few lighting combinations work harder than a chandelier above a dining table.
It anchors the room beautifully while creating a warm, intimate atmosphere perfect for dinner parties and everyday dining alike.
Crystal chandeliers bring timeless glamour, while smoked glass or matt metal finishes feel more contemporary and understated.
Style Tip: Hang your chandelier approximately 30–36 inches above the dining table for the perfect balance of impact and practicality.
Living Room Chandeliers: Layer The Lighting
In the living room, chandeliers work best as part of a layered lighting scheme.
Use your ceiling light to establish the mood, then build around it with table lamps, wall lights and candles for a softer, more inviting atmosphere.
Open-plan spaces particularly benefit from chandelier lighting, as it helps define zones while adding visual interest overhead.
Bedroom Chandeliers: Boutique Vibes Incoming
A chandelier in the bedroom instantly creates that boutique-hotel feel.
Whether you choose a dramatic centrepiece or a softer bohemian-style design in rattan or beads, chandelier lighting adds romance and elegance in equal measure.
Opt for dimmable bulbs and warm lighting tones to keep the atmosphere soft, cocooning and restful.
Bathroom Chandeliers: Unexpected Luxury
Yes, really.
If ceiling height and ventilation allow, a chandelier in the bathroom creates serious spa-hotel energy.
Positioned above a freestanding bath, it turns everyday routines into something far more indulgent.
Always ensure bathroom lighting is professionally installed and suitable for humid spaces.
Choosing The Right Chandelier Style
Modern Chandeliers
Clean lines, sculptural silhouettes and geometric shapes make modern chandeliers ideal for contemporary homes. Think bold but streamlined.
Vintage-Inspired Chandeliers
Aged brass, candle-style bulbs and cut-glass detailing create timeless elegance with a nostalgic edge.
Crystal Chandeliers
Classic for a reason. Crystal chandeliers reflect light beautifully and instantly add glamour to any room.
Bohemian Chandeliers
Natural materials like rattan, wooden beads and woven textures soften a space and create a more relaxed, laid-back look.
Art Deco Chandeliers
Bold symmetry, luxurious finishes and vintage Hollywood vibes make art deco chandeliers perfect for dramatic interiors.
How To Choose The Right Chandelier
When selecting chandelier lighting, scale is everything.
Too small and it disappears; too large and it overwhelms the room.
Consider:
- Ceiling height - flush styles suit lower ceilings, while multi-tiered designs thrive in taller spaces.
- Room function - kitchens may need brighter lighting, while bedrooms benefit from softer illumination.
- Your interior style - choose a chandelier that complements the personality of your home.
At Rockett St George, we believe lighting should lift your spirits as well as light your room.
Whether your style is bold and maximalist or soft and understated, the right chandelier has the power to completely transform your home, one fabulous glow at a time.

Chandelier FAQs
Choosing the right chandelier is all about balancing style with functionality. After all, it needs to both look good and light up your space in a way that you love!
Start by considering the overall aesthetic of your space. If you prefer a traditional aesthetic, a classic crystal or wrought-iron chandelier makes the perfect choice. For a contemporary look, choose clean lines or modern sculptural forms, or go for mixed materials like metal and glass. If your home is more rustic or eclectic, look for wood finishes, organic shapes, or quirky statement pieces. Your chandelier should complement your existing decor while adding a touch of personality.
Getting the scale right is key. The last thing you want after investing in a statement light like this is a chandelier that feels a little bit...well, meh. If it’s too small, it can feel underwhelming, but if it’s too large, it may overpower the space. A helpful formula is to add the room’s length and width (in feet), then convert that number into inches to get a good diameter for your chandelier. For example, a room that’s 12 feet by 14 feet (12 + 14 = 26) could comfortably accommodate a chandelier about 26 inches wide. Genius!
If you want to hang your chandelier over a dining table or kitchen island, it should be narrower than the table - ideally about two-thirds its width. Always ensure there’s enough clearance above the table or floor (typically 30–36 inches above a table and at least 7 feet from the floor if hanging in an open area).
In most cases, yes - it's strongly recommended you hire a qualified electrician to install your chandelier.
Chandeliers, especially larger or more complex designs, often involve ceiling reinforcement, secure mounting and complicated wiring. An electrician will ensure your chandelier is properly installed, balanced, and meets safety standards. This is particularly important if you're replacing a light fixture with a much heavier one or installing the chandelier in a location that’s currently not wired for lighting.
The exception to this is Easyfit chandeliers, which are specially designed to be attached to an existing light fitting. If a chandelier is Easyfit, it will be labelled as such for your peace of mind. If it’s not Easyfit, we’d recommend professional installation to ensure your beautiful new fixture is securely in place and safe to use.
To keep your chandelier sparkling and in top condition, a gentle dusting every few weeks and a thorough cleaning once or twice a year is a good rule of thumb.
For regular maintenance, use a feather duster or a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust and prevent build-up. Always make sure your chandelier is off (and cool) before you begin.
For deeper cleaning:
- If the chandelier can be easily reached, turn it off, remove any detachable parts (like crystals or shades), and gently clean them with a mild glass cleaner or a solution of water and white vinegar.
- For high ceilings or intricate designs, consider using a ladder with care, or hiring a professional chandelier cleaner to ensure safety and thoroughness.
Regular cleaning keeps your beautiful chandelier clean and sparkling, and helps it shine super-bright, maximising light output and that all-important ambiance!
If the word ‘chandelier’ brings to mind images of super-fancy, ornate lighting solutions that wouldn’t look out of place in a stately home, think again! There are plenty of minimalist and modern chandeliers that focus on clean lines, simple forms, and understated elegance for a more streamlined, contemporary look.
You might particularly like:
- Geometric shapes like circles, linear bars, or multi-layered clusters.
- Neutral finishes such as brushed brass, polished chrome (or even feathers – trust us, this is a look!)
- Sculptural silhouettes that act as both functional light sources and modern art pieces.
These chandeliers are perfect for open, airy spaces and work beautifully in modern, Scandinavian, industrial, or mid-century-inspired interiors. Despite their (relative) simplicity, modern chandeliers often make a striking statement through thoughtful design and innovative materials.
If your new statement light isn’t quite what you were expecting, or doesn’t suit the room, you have 30 days to return it.
